Newborn Baby Photographers Los Angeles

What happens when an adorable couple and an equally adorable baby walk into our home studio? A MAGICAL newborn photography session, that’s what! Warning. Ooohs and aaahs are upcoming as you take in some of our favorites from this photo shoot! This baby girl stole our hearts from the moment she arrived. Sleeping soundly from the start, she snoozed her entire session. Making all her poses and set ups a breeze for us! A newborn photographer’s dream! We are so thankful one of our colleagues (and amazing maternity photographer!), Oxana Alex Photography, recommended us to this beautiful family as their newborn baby photographers Los Angeles. Mom reached out to me pretty close to her due date. But luckily we still had some availability left on our schedule. So happy we did! But first, a little more about how our studio works!

1. Newborn Photoshoot Scheduling

If you are wondering when the best time to schedule a newborn photography session is, you’re not alone! In fact, one of the most frequently asked questions is how we handle our calendar and the scheduling of photo shoots. Since we really don’t know when baby will actually arrive, the answer to this is twofold. First, booking only a set amount of sessions per month, and second being quite flexible. Once both the retainer and contract are received, we simply add baby’s due date to our newborn calendar as a holding place. This then goes towards the total count of newborn sessions we can accept within a given month. We stay in touch on any updates regarding baby’s delivery. When baby is born, we then schedule the actual date of the photography session. This will typically be between 7-14 days of birth. However, in some cases, we may go outside this timeframe due to things like an unexpected C-section, additional time needed for a smaller baby to gain weight, any NICU or extended hospital stays, etc. I always tell parents our newborn baby photographers Los Angeles schedule is like a chess game, always in motion. So although most of our clients book us 4-8 weeks prior to delivery, we sometimes do end up with a last minute opening here and there.

2. The Newborn Photography Session Plan

So this gorgeous girl and her adoring mom and dad came to our home studio for their session. They opted for our Deluxe Newborn Family Collection, which includes shots of both baby by herself and baby with parents. After reviewing their pre-session questionnaire, we could tell they were leaning towards a softer color story. Lots of ivory and cream with accents of blush, rose and softer pinks. Mom loved all our dainty floral headbands we’ve become known for. She also loved a shot we’ve done with baby swaddled up in a basket, cuddling our little giraffe lovey. So cute! Details of baby’s hands and feet, a mix of bare baby and prop shots, black and white options, a shot with mom and dad’s hands on baby and them kissing baby were important, too. Just our style. We couldn’t wait to get to work and capture beautiful memories for them! Here are some of our favorites from this beautiful infant photoshoot.

Also, a quote from mommy that we received right after the photoshoot that warmed our hearts!

“Thank you both for all the stunning photos. I can’t believe that the little baby in the photos is ours. She looks so perfect!!!  I’m in love with all the photos.”

3. Baby Girl’s Photoshoot

newborn baby girl posed for photoshoot

Since baby girl arrived sound asleep, we started off with those adorable bare baby shots. These poses can be a challenge if baby isn’t in a deep sleep. But this gorgeous girl was in dreamland as I gently moved her into those sweet sleepy baby poses. First, we started with this pose and accented her beautiful floral headband with a soft mohair hand knit wrap. Love her little toes peeking out!

Matt always likes to shoot from above, too. Aerial shots are some of our favorite angles! This rose color is so perfect against her fair skin.

Next, we transitioned into this sweet pose. This all cream look is so soft, light and airy. I played with our gauze swaddle wrap a few different ways for variety in her proof gallery. I have to admit, I love both ways! Mom did too, as she chose both of these in her final selections! This pose is one of our top requests for girls especially. Moms love the way the fabric wrap flows out from behind baby.

Still in dreamland, we captured this next beautiful pose where the focus is all about baby’s gorgeous face. This image makes my heart flutter. The simplicity of the image, the soft lighting and that dainty floral crown make this a swoon worthy image in our book! And those lips! She’s perfect!

Could not move on from this pose without getting another aerial perspective!

newborn baby wearing teddy bear hatI just couldn’t resist switching her floral headband for one of our custom hand knit angora teddy bear hats! This cream version gets used a lot! Angora is such a beautiful yarn to work with, as it gives off this slightly ethereal halo around baby’s face and skin. Often when we try for the headband to hat switch, baby will wake or become fussy. But not this girl! Took off her headband, fitted the hat on her, tied it off to the side, and she was still happy and sleepy as could be. This shot is one of my all time favorite images we’ve ever taken in any of our newborn sessions and is one of the top shots that new clients request!

Newborn Baby Photographers in Los AngelesAfter we finished all the fabric poses, we moved onto this very textured and dreamy look. The background is actually a very soft flokati rug that lays over a posing pillow so baby stays completely padded and comfortable. Swaddled in our favorite 100% cashmere wrap, this look was accessorized with a beautiful pink and cream floral headband. So happy we caught a sleepy smile on this one!

Newborn Baby Photographers in Los AngelesNext up, prop shots! First we started with this vintage wire basket. Looks so lovely against the light wood floor background and pale iced pink wrap and fluff! This beautiful wrap was custom made for our studio in 100% cashmere yarn. It is right up our alley in terms of color palette and the texture of the fluff photographs beautifully. Her look is topped off with a tiny rosette and gold embellished headband. Perfect! As newborn baby photographers in Los Angeles, it is so important to us that our props and accessories really reflect our true style.

Remember that sweet little giraffe prop that mommy requested? Well, here he is! All snuggled up with baby girl. Since giraffes are huge in nursery themes right now, we knew we just had to have a custom felted version made for us by Salwach Photography Props. It came out perfect! This wood newborn baby bed photography prop is also one of our favorites! Baby looks so cozy in her swaddle wrap, giraffe lovey, and pink fluff blanket. We added in a little woven macrame textured layer and topped her look off with a dainty floral and greenery headband.

Our last prop set up was a darling all cream look using our driftwood bowl- a newborn baby photographers favorite! The natural look of the wood combined with all that beautiful cream texture photographs beautifully! Add in one gorgeous baby girl with jet black hair and a soft pink floral headband- voila! I love that we caught another sweet little smile!

After prop shots, we shifted gears and went for the most challenging shot that we offer in our portfolio. The highly requested Dad hands holding baby shot. The impact of how tiny baby is and Dad’s big hands holding them makes for a gorgeous shot. We always capture this image on a pure black background to add depth and drama to the shot. Parents are often surprised at how long this one shot can take. The time it takes to set up, settle baby in, and place Dad’s hands in the right positions, without waking an unswaddled baby- the stars have to all align! And align they did during this sweet one’s session. She was snoozing away while we captured Dad’s hands, then we surprised mom and brought her hands in, too! We were also able to capture some timeless and beautifully lit baby only shots. Wins all around!

Last, we captured parent shots with this sweet baby girl. We always start with mommy + baby shots. As I gently placed baby into her mom’s arms, she just seemed to melt perfectly in. The connection between these two was absolutely beautiful to see. Matt and I could not get over how gorgeous mom looked- just DAYS after giving birth! As mom was coo’ing, kissing, gazing and talking softly to her new baby girl, we captured all of it- these emotions all documented forever. Black and white are always favorites for parent pictures.

Daddy and his new baby girl

Now it was Dad’s turn- and he handled it like a boss! Holding his brand new baby girl, you could see the pure love in his eyes. His sweet baby was so totally relaxed in his arms- already Daddy’s girl for sure!

Their first family portraits! Beautiful baby + gorgeous mom + handsome Dad= a wonderful, loving FAMILY. Look at them just taking her in and loving on her. One thing we know for sure. This sweet girl was born into a family brimming full of pure love! She is one lucky baby girl. Congratulations to these two wonderful parents and their sweet baby girl. This session was truly a newborn baby photographers Los Angeles dream!

A quote from mom to us after she saw her proof gallery:

“Thank you both again for your incredible creativity and creating such beautiful works of art with my little Angel. Thank you for capturing my daughter in the most stunning light….this is the best birthday gift I could ever give to myself.”

When is the best time to schedule a newborn photography session?

The best time to schedule a newborn photography session is within the first two weeks of birth. We typically like to schedule newborn sessions within 7-14 days old, as this is when baby is still sleeping deeply and easier to position into those sweet newborn poses. Babies after two weeks tend to be less sleepy, wake easier while being posed or wrapped, and will be just a little less curly when we pose them. However, it is absolutely still possible to do the photo shoot outside the usual 7-14 day timeframe, we just might capture more swaddled than bare baby shots.

What is newborn photography?

A professional photo session that typically takes place within 7-14 days of baby’s birth. A professional photographer uses a variety of props, backdrops and accessories to capture a newborn in different artistic set ups and poses to document and celebrate this special time of a new baby’s life. Most newborn photographers will capture images of both baby by himself, as well as baby with his parents if requested.

How much does newborn photography cost?

Newborn photography can vary greatly in terms of investment. Factors like the photographer’s experience, quality of work, knowledge of lighting, the caliber and amount of props and wardrobe provided, length of time of the photoshoot, amount of digital files or products included and finally, the location of the photographer can all affect the cost of a newborn photography session. Parents should consider the photographer’s experience as the top factor when hiring a newborn photographer.

When should you take newborn pictures?

The best time to take newborn pictures is when baby is between 7-14 days old. Babies under two weeks tend to sleep deeper and longer and are easier to pose into sweet newborn positions. Newborn pictures can still be taken past 14 days, but these pictures will focus more on swaddled and wrapped baby shots. The maximum age for any kind of newborn photography is about five weeks old.
